Spartak juniors win World Cup

Spartak juniors win World Cup

01 Sep 2014 | Henrik Lundqvist

The fourth edition of the Junior Club World Cup was played last week in Ufa, Russia. And for the third time a Russian team finished on top.

The Spartak Moscow organization is struggling with financial problems and won't participate in the upcoming KHL season. Their junior team still shows it is competitive.

Last week ended with a triumph at the final of the Junior Club World Cup. In the final Spartak beat fellow Russians Tolpar Ufa 2-1 after a shootout ending.

The tournament started badly for the Moscow team that almost missed the semi finals. First a 3-2 shooutout loss to Malmö of Sweden and then a 4-3 loss to Austrian Red Bull. Thanks to a shootout win over HK Riga of Latvia 3-2 in the third game there was still a chance to reach the semis. But then Spartak would need to beat undefeated Sioux City Musketeers (USHL). And so they did. Thanks to Dmitri Vorobiev's 4-3 goal in the middle of the third period Spartak qualified for the semis.

In the semi final Spartak got a comfortable 3-0 win over Dinamo-Shinnik of Belarus. In the other semi final the home team Tolpar Ufa beat Sioux City Musketeers 6-4.
