In Brasov, Ferencvaros opens the tournament by scoring six unanswered goals versus Energija Elektrenai. Corona Brasov completes a thrilling comeback in the overtime with a late allowed goal
Ferencvaros - Energija Elektrenai 6-0 (5-0, 1-0, 0-0)
The second round of the Continental Cup, held in Brașov, Romania, kicked off with a dominant performance by Hungarian champions Ferencváros, who easily overcame the Lithuanian side Energija Elektrėnai. Energija, the winners of the first round held in Narva, were no match for Ferencváros, who sealed the game early on with an overwhelming 5-goal advantage in the first period. The Hungarian team, playing in front of a small but passionate group of supporters, demonstrated their superiority right from the start, with three goals coming in the first five minutes of play.
The scoring spree began at 2:56 when Finnish forward Michael Keränen found the net off assists from Martin Zoltán Turbucz and Adam Brady. Just three minutes later, at 5:29, it was the Canadian captain Adam Brady himself who doubled the lead, again with the help of Turbucz and Balázs Bogati. Within 30 seconds, Ferencváros struck again, this time through Máté Miklós Martonffy at 5:55, assisted by Keränen and Brady, making it 3-0 and firmly establishing control over the game.
By 11:48, the unstoppable Keränen added his second goal, assisted once more by Brady and Turbucz, extending the lead to 4-0. The first period's rout was capped off at 18:29 with a power-play goal by Aku Kestilä, assisted by Brady and Paavo Tyni. This rapid-fire sequence effectively put the game out of reach for Energija Elektrėnai before the first intermission.
In the second period, Ferencváros continued to assert their dominance, with Tyson Helgesen scoring at 31:57 after being set up by Valentin Razumnyak and Dominic Vidoli, pushing the score to 6-0.
Ferencváros’ goalkeeper László Földes delivered an exceptional performance, saving all 27 shots he faced and securing a well-deserved shutout. His counterpart, Arkady Grigaravicius, while overpowered by the relentless Hungarian attack, managed to make 34 saves but allowed 6 goals, finishing the game with a save percentage of 82.35%.
Among Ferencváros' standout players, Adam Brady was instrumental in his team’s success, contributing 1 goal and 4 assists, earning him the Man of the Match honors. Brady's +4 rating highlighted his all-around impact on both ends of the ice. Michael Keränen shone as well, scoring 2 goals and providing 1 assist, finishing with a +3 rating. Defensively, Tyson Helgesen stood out with a +2 rating, scoring 1 goal and taking 2 penalty minutes.
Energija Elektrėnai struggled to find any offensive rhythm, with many of their key players finishing the game with negative ratings. Simonas Valivonis and Vakaris Cizas ended with a -4, while Matej Houdek and Artem Redko both finished with a -3. Despite their efforts, they couldn't break through Földes' wall in goal.
This match highlights Ferencváros' offensive firepower and defensive
solidity as they move confidently through the Continental Cup. With
standout performances from players like Adam Brady and Michael Keränen,
the Hungarian champions seem poised for continued success in the
tournament.
The Continental Cup match between hosts Corona Brasov and Optibet Liga leaders Mogo Riga delivered an exciting, hard-fought contest at the buzzing Olympic Arena in Brașov, Romania. Despite being short-staffed and forced to field only three lines to comply with the competition's import rules, Brasov pushed hard against a highly experienced Mogo Riga side. However, it was the Latvians who initially took control of the game.
In the first period, Mogo Riga held off the early pressure from Corona Brasov, with the support of their fans energizing the home side. Despite Brasov's dominance in possession and territorial play, Mogo took the lead late in the period. Kārlis Bucenieks opened the scoring at 12:00, followed by a counterattack goal from Kārlis Ozoliņš at 19:14, making it 2-0 in favor of Mogo Riga as the period ended.
Brasov started the second period on the front foot, immediately capitalizing on a power play with Albert Zagidullin netting the home side's first goal at 21:58. Mogo Riga's discipline began to falter, as they conceded more penalties in this game than they had in any single match during the entire Optibet Liga season.
Despite this, Mogo restored their two-goal cushion with a penalty shot goal from Kārlis Ozoliņš at 28:25, making it 3-1. However, Brasov was not done yet. The power-play unit struck again, with David Levin scoring at 31:48, followed just two minutes later by Evgeny Skachkov, tying the game 3-3 before the end of the period.
In the final period, both teams had their chances to score, but solid goaltending on both ends ensured the game remained tied through regulation. Brasov's Zoltan Toke stood tall, making key saves to keep his team in the game. Mogo Riga’s Henrijs Ančs also performed well but was ultimately undone in overtime.
Just over 55 seconds into overtime, Brasov thought they had won the game when the puck appeared to cross the goal line. After a video review, it was confirmed that the puck had indeed crossed, sealing a dramatic 4-3 overtime victory for Corona Brasov.
This thrilling match showcased the resilience of Corona Brasov, who overcame a two-goal deficit and multiple penalties to secure a memorable 4-3 overtime win against a formidable Mogo Riga side. The victory not only highlighted Brasov's tenacity but also the importance of special teams, as Mogo's penalty troubles were key to Brasov's comeback.
