The 2025 IIHF Continental Cup Superfinals began with a strong statement from tournament hosts Cardiff Devils, who overpowered GKS Katowice 6-3 at the Vindico Arena
The opening period saw both teams playing cautiously, focusing on defensive structure and minimizing errors. GKS Katowice managed 8 shots on goal, but Cardiff, buoyed by the home crowd, fired 18 at Polish goaltender John Murray. Murray, who ended the game with an impressive 43 saves out of 49 shots, kept his team in the game early on, denying dangerous chances from Josh MacDonald and Cole Sanford.
The best opportunity for Katowice came late in the period when Grzegorz Pasiut was fouled during a breakaway, resulting in a penalty for Cardiff’s Josh Batch. Despite this, the period ended scoreless, with GKS carrying a power play into the second frame.
GKS opened the scoring early in the second period (20:40) when Jean Dupuy capitalized on a sharp pass from Patryk Wronka, putting the Polish side ahead 1-0. However, Cardiff responded swiftly and ruthlessly.
Josh MacDonald tied the game at 24:00, seizing a rebound after Joey Martin forced a turnover. Five minutes later, Reid Duke (29:32) gave Cardiff their first lead of the game, thanks to Sam Duggan’s hustle behind the net. From there, Cardiff seized full control.
Brett Perlini extended the lead on the power play (33:07) with a precise shot assisted by Zach O’Brien and Cody Donaghey. Just over a minute later, O’Brien scored (34:18) following a brilliant setup by Mark Richardson. The period concluded with Cole Sanford (38:46) capitalizing on a deflected shot by Gleason Fournier, giving Cardiff a commanding 5-1 lead.
In the third period, GKS Katowice showed resilience. Bartosz Fraszko scored twice (49:30, 55:23), both assisted by the dynamic Patryk Wronka. Fraszko’s efforts gave Katowice a brief spark and highlighted his strong offensive presence, earning him the Man of the Match honor for GKS.
Despite this fightback, Cardiff maintained their dominance. Zach O’Brien scored his second goal of the game (53:01) on the power play, solidifying his Man of the Match title for the Devils. The game ended 6-3, with Cardiff firmly in control throughout.
With this win, Cardiff has set the tone for the tournament. They can secure the title with a victory over Brûleurs de Loups in Sunday’s final game. Meanwhile, GKS Katowice will need a regulation win against the French side on Saturday to keep their championship hopes alive.
